High Ability Learners
Neurodiverse Minds Deserve An Equitable Education

High Ability Learners are under-identified.  They can underachieve, question authority, be intensely curious, over-excitable, or a student with a disability. These students' needs are not mandated and depend on districts to be trained to ensure the academic, social, and emotional success of all students.

Despite the lack of state mandate, many districts are participating in Professional Development to ensure that all students have their needs met and are given the opportunity to be engaged and socially confident learners. Have your district or school added to the "Trained Safe Schools for High Ability Learners" list. There are parents of already identified children looking for a capital region school that is "safe" for their child to be understood and accepted for their uniqueness and for their different learning needs.

All children are equally valued individuals with talents, gifts, and unique qualities. Children at either end of the bell curve often require differentiated instruction and assessment, as well as social and emotional support to be successful.

The term "gifted" has given the population to the right end of the bell curve an inaccurate presumption of elitism and affluence. The majority of unidentified high ability learners are middle and lower income students who may be counting on teachers, administrators, school counselors, and psychologists to help them be successful and thrive.

Educational testing can identify students and guide teachers and administrators toward appropriate accommodations. Being a High Ability Learner is not always a "gift". Without an understanding of what is going on inside the mind of a child, the student can often be misunderstood, misdiagnosed as hyperactive, disrespectful of authority, and inattentive. Understanding the signs of a child struggling in the classroom or with other students can make all the difference. It is common for High Ability Learners to be highly self critical, anxious, and to retreat inward with concerns over large existential questions.

Being identified and valued for their uniqueness can be life changing for academic and personal success. Complete professional development and be added to the "Trained Safe Schools for High Ability Learners" list that is being created in our area. There is a population of parents looking for a safe school environment where their child will be understood, valued, challenged, and encouraged.

Professional Development Training for faculty and administration can keep students from slipping through the cracks.

When it is understood how the mind works, differentiation and instruction can adapt to meet all student needs.

High Ability Learners often need help with social skills, organization, time management, self control, anxiety, perfectionism, and stress management strategies.

New York State is currently 1 of 8 states that offer zero mandated funding or programs for High Ability Learners. Some of our brightest youth have been slipping through the cracks in education. After a difficult year with Covid-interrupted schooling, get training to help all students be seen for their true strengths and innate talents that all too often go unnoticed or unencouraged.
